Philippe Dubuc
A ceramist in Coulombs, Eure-et-Loir. A stoneware practice where shaping clay meets the work of painting.
From painting to clay
Born in 1947, Philippe Dubuc trained for three years with Akira Tanimoto at the Cheval à l’Envers studio. He then taught there for a decade. His interest in painting accompanies his ceramic practice.
Composing with form and glaze
Drawing and painting accompanied my early years. Through ceramics, I found another way to work with forms and colours.
Today, I compose with stoneware and glazes. Volume, layers of colour and patterns respond to one another, whether in a bowl, a vase, a platter or a box.
Firing retains an element of uncertainty. When I open the kiln, I discover what the fire has transformed. This anticipation and surprise remain at the heart of my work.
Then comes the pleasure of sharing the pieces, of seeing them meet other people's eyes and become part of everyday life.

A conversation with Philippe Dubuc
In this conversation with Anne Rouillé, Philippe Dubuc discusses his move from painting to clay, learning to throw, and applying glaze with a painter’s gestures. He also reflects on the beauty of everyday objects and the attachment that can grow around a bowl. As the conversation unfolds, the way he looks at form meets the way he looks at the surface: learning to throw, composing with glazes, then living with objects. The chapter markers below let you return to these moments and hear the artist discuss his practice, beauty and the bowl’s place between everyday use and a work of art.
