Philippe Dubuc
A ceramist in Coulombs, Eure-et-Loir. A stoneware practice where shaping clay meets the work of painting.
From painting to clay
Born in 1947, Philippe Dubuc trained for three years with Akira Tanimoto at the Cheval à l’Envers studio. He then taught there for a decade. His interest in painting accompanies his ceramic practice.
Composing with form and glaze
Philippe Dubuc works with glazed stoneware. Layers of glaze overlap on the volumes; brushwork and paraffin reserves help build the patterns. Clay slabs make it possible to construct forms whose surfaces become a space for composition.
Vases, bowls, platters and boxes give these surfaces different directions: moving around a volume, the expanse of a platter, the meeting of a lid and its box. The gallery offers a way through these families, then a closer look at each piece.

A conversation with Philippe Dubuc
In this conversation with Anne Rouillé, Philippe Dubuc discusses his move from painting to clay, learning to throw, and applying glaze with a painter’s gestures. He also reflects on the beauty of everyday objects and the attachment that can grow around a bowl. As the conversation unfolds, the way he looks at form meets the way he looks at the surface: learning to throw, composing with glazes, then living with objects. The chapter markers below let you return to these moments and hear the artist discuss his practice, beauty and the bowl’s place between everyday use and a work of art.
